Having problems getting starter off UTS - it needs to be rebuilt but seems frozen in mounting. I have removed locking bolt that pins it in, but unable to budge starter. Any obvious secrets I'm missing? Is this a common problem? Solutions?

Once the bolt is loosened the starter should just slide out. I have a U. Make sure the bolt is all the way out. You might consider taking an oil filter wrench and slipping it over the starter just to wiggle it to loosen it up.

Hope that helps.

Might have to use big screwdriver to start the starter to move, after soaking with penetrating oil. Use hammer carefully on housing, starter housing to move it out. The rims you asked about in the other post can usually be bouight from the local industrial/truck tire place. Up here, in Illinois, it's Antioch Tire or Pomp Tire, both good industrial tire shops.

Thanks for response. Have soaked with penetrating oil after first wire brushing to open up with respect to paint which was done afterward and sealed joint. This must be a very tight fit. Pried up a little between block and front of starter to see if it would free up, but did not want to force it. Not much place to pry against to move starter forward - where is best place to apply force - have thought about a pointed pry bar down into screw hole but I think that would mess up threads. Best. I try to force a screwdriver blade between the starter barrel and the bellhousing casting to get it to move, then try to turn it using a strap wrench and tapping with the hammer. Once it moves, you can usually figure how to get to move out.

Get a lead hammer. It wont mess up the starter and will let you tap around on it more, I have had a couple that didn't want to come out. it can bee a challenge. Good luck
