Who can tell me what the difference in rod journals would be between a UTSD and a 5 Star diesel. Also, is the rod journals of a UTSD the same as a G-1000 diesel series engine. I am trying to figure out what rods to use in my UTSD engine. He who knows, how about a helping hand with some info.
Thanks, Alan

Big Al, MM diesel engines were three sizes standard. 206-220 the same,283 through 504 the same, the first 750 425's were U gas size, and 585's were by themselves.

Thanks for your response. Are you telling me that my UTSD (diesel) rods will be the same thing as the G-1000? I want to be sure that I have enough of the right stuff gathered up to rebuild and assemble my project. I have the UTSD rods (in the engine) and a set of G-1000 rods on the table. I want to use the best of the pile. I also have a set of G-1000 pistons for use. I have one G-1000 block and need to find one more. The G-1000 block will bolt right on my UTSD crank case will it not?

Alan,
The U diesel has the same rod journal diameter as the U gas tractors. This is smaller than the G1000 journals. The GTBD tractors used the small U size rod journals but by the time the GVI came out the rod journal had been increased to the larger size like the G1000. I believe the 336 engine like what's in a 5 Star diesel has the large rod journal size. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Brian

I'm thinking that some U diesels had the small (gas) size crank journals and some had the larger size. Probably the early Us used the small journal and then MM went to the larger journal.

Just what I heard, no data to back it up.

I've got a UBED tore down in the shop right next to a UTU. I could have sworn they had the same rod journal sizes but I've been wrong before. I'll have to go measure them now. I tore them down so long ago I don't remember.

Brian or anyone, Next question, If I choose to uprate my UTSD with the larger bore of the 336. I would need to use the rods from my original 283 diesel, correct. How about wrist pins. Will the 283D wrist pins work in the pistons made for a G-1000. I see another option, go to a 5 Star or 670 crank, will the mains fit my UTSD block? I am sure, in one way or another I can basically put this together without much machine work. Anyone else have additional experience in this matter? If a later crank from a 5 Star or 670 will fit, are the gas cranks the same as the diesel cranks? It is not my intention to build a heavy duty pulling tracter, just beef up the old girl a bit. I will use her as a back up tractor on the farm and play a bit at the pulls. Hope for some more insites...
Alan
PS I would like to chat over the phone if you are willing.
