My dad just bought a little garden tractor that is painted M-M and had the decals for it. It is an Avery tractor and has the Avery hood emblem. Someone told dad that M-M bought Avery out and they marketed the little tractor under both names. Does anyone know if this is true or not? He has also bought the Avery just like it in Avery paint.

Thanks for any advice!!

B.F. Avery was a union soldier in the Civil War, was captured and held in the notorius Andersonville prison camp. He is one of few who lived, and while there drew up plans for a corn planter. After the war he started a tractor company which became one of the largest in the U.S. for awhile. Yes, the B.F. Avery Co was bought by MM in 1951, which I think was bought by White, which I think was bought by Agco-Allis.

I think what you have is a model "V" If it is a "V" the serial number will be on the right side frame rail right by the rear motor mount. The first number means the year, followed by a letter "V" then the number produced that year. You can look up the year on this website. I have one numbered 7V-075. I think it was made in 1954.

Check out pages 102-103 in Wendel & Morland's book "M-M Tractors 1870-1969" to see a full color photo of a Model BF M-M tractor from the Roger Mohr Collection. You can find this Motorbooks publication many places, usually such as C T Farm, farm toy stores, net sources.

The book states the tractor was produced by B. F. Avery & Co. of Louisville KY starting in 1945. The book states that Avery built small farm tractors for Cleveland Tractor Co., but that Cleveland Tractor Co. was acquired by Oliver in 1944. The book states M-M acquired Avery in 1951, and that the Model BF was produced by M-M from 1951-1955. My Hot Line guide lists Avery A produced 1946-52 and Avery BF produced 1950-58. I saw an Avery A at an auction sold for $370 this spring where a Ford 8N engine had been installed in the tractor. I think this tractor is also the same model as a Wards and Cletrac GG. I am sure there are Avery/M-M collectors who will provide more detailed information in response to your question. It is helpful if you provide a serial number to verify the model information.

Oops! In looking into this matter further it appears to me that the tractor photo in the MBI book MAY be an M-M Model V and not a Model BF. If you look at the Nebraska Test photos for Test No. 469 Oct. 1951, the BF tractor weighed 2,894 lbs. and was similar to the M-M RTU in size and horsepower output when tested. The Model BF had a Hercules 4-cyl. engine, 4F/1R speeds.

I believe the Model V was similar to the Cletrac Little General tractor with a Hercules 4-cyl. engine, 3F/1R speeds. Again, the Avery/M-M collectors should be able to answer your question.

Thanks for the info. What you told meabout the dates they were built work with what the people he bought it said about when it was built I am going to look for the Serial number in the morning and make sure. It is a model BF as I remember,
