I have recently acquired my grand fathers 1951 RTU. I won't start - no spark @ the plugs. It was last run about 3 years ago. Also is this a 6 volt positive group? What should I be checking and in what order. Thanks in advance.

Cleaned the junk off the the rotor button and points with a fine sand paper and I now have ignition. Now if I can find directions on how to take the heads off(I had water pour out of the carb). I'm hoping it is only the head gasket. Does anyone know where I can find the MM-S-R Service Manual for the R? How much should the 2 head gaskets cost-ball park? Thanks to everyone.

Re: R with no spark/water coming from carb in reply to 1951 RTU, 04-15-2005 15:35:01
Purchased a 6 volt charger and charged what we thought was a weak battery. The next day it still was a little slow to turn over and then siezed like(a few seconds later water/antifreeze poured out of the carburetor. I pulled the plugs to see which if any were wet. Water poured out of the second plug from the front of the tractor.
I sure hope this is a head gasket and not a cracked block or something. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

You'd be surprised at all the problems that crop up when a tractor is parked for a few years! You will just have to start at the battery and check every wire and conection. Switches can go bad, points can get corroded. You can use an electical meter and follow the current around. An owners book has a electical diagram, you might need that.
Been there and done that,

Your RTU came from the factory with a 6 volt positive ground system. If it ran when it was parked 3 years ago then I'd clean the points in the distributor and go from there. If that doesn't work then check you wiring to be sure a mouse hasn't eaten through a wire anywhere in the last 3 years. You can run a jumper from the battery to the coil to be sure its not the wiring.

Brian and BMG, Thanks to you both. I tried to test the output from the coil and received a shock so it may be the points/distributor. I have run the battery down and need to go buy a 6 volt charger. Again thanks to both of you as any info is greatly appreciated.

You may want to replace the condensor in it as well because they can go bad from just setting as well. They can short out at anytime even if the tractor is not in use.
