I HAVE THE UNDERSTANDING THAT A GB (403) CRANKCASE
HAS DOWEL PINS TO ALIGN MAIN BEARING CAPS.
WHAT WAS THE REASON FOR THE CHANGE ?, AND WHAT WOULD THE CRANKCASE NUMBER BE ON A THE NEWER VERSION.

THANK'S FOR ANY HELP

BUD BARENIE

Bud, I spoke to Doug Henderson last night and yes, the late GB crankcases had the dowel pins you speak of. I do not recall the part number but I will ask tomorrow. The only better crankcase is a M670 Super. The reason for the dowel pins is to lock in the location and prevent the movement of the caps as the motor turned. It probably made no difference, but a stroker motor could use it as an advantage from the increased torque and necessary crank stability especially with more RPM.

A good machine shop could add the dowels in a couple of hours if the block was out of the tractor.

The main cap has flanges on the side for the dowel pins to fit in the cap is also heavier and has 9/16 studs instead of the 1/2 inch studs of a regular G. The center main and webbing is heavier looking as well.
