Hi everybody, I'm new here and new to MMs. I just bought an M5 and everything was going well until the low range stopped working. When I let the clutch out it acts like its wants to go, then nothing. The high range works fine, and the low range worked fine (no problems) just the day before. Is this an adjustment or is it something major? I would really appreciate some help here. I tried one of the other forums, but no one would reply. I think my buddies and I can tackle the job if we have a little advice as what to look for. I'd appreciate any help you can give me.
Thanks
Schmidty

The adjustment described by Mike in other post will only affect your high range. Low range is a planetary unit combined with an overriding clutch which either holds or does'nt. It has no adjustment. It can be replaced by spliting tractor and will be EXPENSIVE. If you tackle it would reccomend getting shop manual for guide. You can use it like it is with no ;problems.

Schmidty, it is possible that it is slipping, and can be corrected by adjusting. When you engage the amplitorque it should take 30 to 40lbs. of effort to engage it, and you should feel the lever go over center indicating that the ampli-torque is fully engaged. I'm not real familier with the M5's, but have a 4-Star, and the ampli-torque is mechanical on on both these and several other MM models. On the 4-Star there is a large washer with a bolt in the middle of it just below where the lever enters the transmission housing. If you remove this bolt and washer, you will find that it is a cover for the access hole to adjust the ampli-torque clutches. When you look into the access hole you will see a round nut with cogs, (for lack of a better term) and a detent pin. The detent pin has to be depressed befor the nut can be turned. Depress the detent pin with a screw driver or some other divice, and turn the nut one complete revolution. Try to engage the ampli-torque lever to see if there is an increase in resistance to engage it. Continue to adjust the nut until you feel the 30 to 40lbs. of effort to engage it. This should solve your problem unless there is something broken or the clutches are worn out. Also, another important note, if you don't find the access hole that I've discribed, you may have to remove the top of the transmission to gain access to the ampli-torque.
Good Luck!
Mike

Don't know a thing about the ampli torque, but I read in some MM tractor Ownner's manual which said, "do not use low range until the transmission warms up." Maybe someone can give better advice on your problem.

Thanks for replying guys,
Mike, I haven't had a chance to tackle this yet but you'v got some great info here to start with. I don't remember seeing the access bolt but I will check tonight. I think this sounds like the problem because I don't feel the low range lever engage, it just hits a stop. Hopfully I'll get a chance to work on it tonight. Thanks again for the info.

THERE ARE A LOT OF M5 MOLINES OUT THERE THAT HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. AND MOST OF THEM JUST RUN THE HI SIDE OF THE TRANSMISSION. I HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM ON MY M5. AFTER BREAKING IT DOWN IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE SPRAGE BEARING WAS OUT.
THE COST FOR THE PARTS RUN ABOUT $500.00 ABOUT 10 YEARS AGO. YOU STILL CAN GET THE PARTS AT ANY AGCO
DEALERSHIP. A M5 MANUEL AND A WEEKEND IS ALL YOU NEED. GOOD LUCK
