Bought a 1948 R, partly torn apart, put new rod bearings (std) and rear main .0010 under and all seems well, escept alot of "noise" from what I think is front roller bearing which was not replaced. How common and should I be concerned?
Thanks

All I can apply is common sense. The tractor is 50 yrs. old. We have no idea of the life over these yrs. By comparison they have no valve train to make noise like a push rod engine. My guess would be the bearing has a hole rusted through the hard chrome. Everytime a roller goes over the hole it makes noise. Two things could happen the bearing will lock-up or the bearing will spit the roller out. The second would put the entire load of the crank on the rear bearing. Could break the crankshaft. Replace the front bearing.

I agree with mm that a noisy front roller bearing is bad news and could lead to serious engine damage. Plus, I've been told they are hard to come by. Something else in the front end of that engine that could make that kind of noise would be the front camshaft bearing or the verticle distributor shaft that goes through two bushings to run the oil pump. Could it be possible for the oil galleries that let oil feed to this shaft to be plugged and you've got a dry bushing?
