If I remember correctly I used the 403 flywheel in the "U" & the starter worked correctly after doing some grinding on the inside of the trans housing to clear the starter nose.

On the "UB's", I used the UB flywheel with the 403 ring gear. Had to remove some material from the inside of the ring gear as the 403 flywheel is a few thousandths smaller where the ring gear sits. You will have to do some grinding on the inside of the trans housing to clear the starter nose. You may be able to fit a 403 ring gear on the "U" flywheel in the same manner.

JK2, my 403 is out of a powerunit & the flywheel itself just fits inside the bellhousing but the ring gear wont. i was told to grind the inside of the bell for clearance but that will leave only about an 1/8 of an inch of meat between the bell bolt holes & i dont want to weaken it like that.i also looked at removing material & moving the starter inward & then i guess try to fab a piece to fill in on the outside of the starter hole. just wondered if anyone knows of this being done or somebody made pieces to do this with? i also could put the crank in the 283 case but i was told i wouldnt be able to hand start this engine & i"d love to prove them wrong plus the starter, gen,& battery are getting close to 100lbs.

I'm almost certain that the flywheel in my UTU is the one that was on the 403 power unit, complete with ring gear. I don't remember having to do much if any grinding on the inside of the bellhousing except for clearance for the starter nose.
I am certain that the ring gear on the last UB I did is from a 403 power unit. I had to grind some form the inside of the ring gear to allow it to fit on the UB flywheel but there has been no problem getting it in and out of the bellhousing.
Is this a UTU or a UTS? Just wondering if maybe the UTS might be a bit smaller ID on the bellhousing?

HI JOHN, ITS A 1948 UTU. THE 403 IS A 1949 PWR UNIT. I DIDNT KNOW IF THE FLYWHEEL WAS DIFFERENT FROM THE TRACTORS OR NOT. THE POCKET BRG. IS A VERY THICK BALL BRG. WITH A LARGER PILOT HOLE. THE WHOLE FLYWHEEL IS AT LEAST TWICE AS DEEP AS THE "U" FLYWHEEL & IT WILL NO WAY FIT INSIDE OF BELL.

I used a 403, crank, flywheel, ring gear and starter in a '54 UTS. The power unit was originally equipped with a single disk clutch. The flywheel fit right in the bellhousing. The only problems back there were: I had to have a spacer made to fit a U pilot bushing in the bore where the bearing went, and I had to grind out the starter clearance in the bell housing to fit the 403 starter.
