I am building a lightweight U puller with my uncle, and we are looking at being able to pull the 4500 lb. class and up. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for some lightweight, but reliable brake calipers? Any suggestions would help. Thanks.

I used Wilwood calipers with CNC master cylinders, which are cheaper than Wilwood master cylinders. If your U has disk brakes I have extra brakets to mount the calipers to bull pinion seal plate.

You don't need to go to all that work, unless you want to. We have had two UTU's down below 4500. They weren't all chopped up looking either. One was a 1939 and the other a 1952, there are plenty of avenues of removing unneeded material before the added expense of brakes. It all depends on where you want to spend the money. We retained factory brakes on ours. It will greatly help but not needed. Going that light; gears would be where I would spend my money, of course this depends on how big your engine is. We pulled ours from 4500-6500, 4th gear was 4500 depending on track sometimes 5500, and 6500 was 3rd gear. We really needed a 4th and a half and a 3rd and a half gears made. With at least 7" stroke by 5.5" bore you should handle 5th on a loose track but would need the 4.5" on a tight clay track. What div. are you planning on pulling is another ? too.

There is a guy in West End NC that makes a mechanical caliper set.

Wilson Machine Shop, I think.

I used calipers off of a eagle talon and made brackets that bolted on to the pattern that the original drum brake plate bolted to. I think it is a 6 or 8 bolt pattern. I took the factory drum and turned it down into a disc. I used willwood master cylinders and pedals.
