I have a live power takeoff unit on my U, and would like to know if I can get rid of it and put a normal Bendix brake on the left hand side. It has a Bendix brake on the right, and it holds much better. I think that they should interchange, but I'm not sure.

I should have proof read my previous message before sending. I left out the word "not". If the two sides do "not"
work the same, they are not in the same condition. They were not made to be different.

The brakes are the same. If they don't stop the same, they are in the same working condition.
Rebuild the brake and it should be as good as the left.

:I looked in an IT tech manual and it shows disc brakes on tractors with the pto clutch unit. I am curious if they would have put different style brakes on the same tractor. It talks about the Bendix brakes on early U's and disc brakes on later U's with the pto clutch option.
Do you think the bendix style will fit on the left side with that pto clutch and without it you wil need a solid bull pinion shaft?
We have a UB with the pto clutch and disk brakes and I think it has pretty good brakes.
We have a ZA with the bendix brakes and that gets pretty grabby in the brakes. Good luck

I am sure that I will need a solid bull pinion shaft, as all the power to the drive wheels comes out the left side to the live power unit. I can't seem to keep brakes on the side with the live power unit, and would like to have brakes that I can count on, on both sides of the tractor.

I have done the convesion your talking about on a 1950 U that I built for pulling.
It is a lot of work. besides the brake assy itself and the pinion shaft, you must also change
the housing that the pinion bearings fit into. To do this requires you to remove
the top cover and BOTH axle housing assemblys so that you can cock the bull gear slightly to get the pinion housing past the bull gear. DONT make the mistake of trying to pry the pinion housing
out without moving the bull gear out of the way. I read in a magazine about a guy doing this on
a Farmall H-which has the same pinion/cage set up.
he just wanted to replace the seal but ended up tearing the whole rearend apart.
