Timing ZTU Mag...Need Help

I am attempting to get a rebuilt magneto timed correctly. I had an extra mag and had it rebuilt while the original stayed on the tractor. I didn't "mess" with the oil pump drive shaft/mag drive shaft at all, as it stayed in place. Following the written process, I made sure the marks on the camshaft gear and on crankshaft lined up first. I followed the directions in operators manual specifically to make sure I did everything in order. The marks on the flywheel line up with the indicator and everything. However, according to the manual, the mag rotor coupling shoud be parallel with the crankshaft when the mag is ready to be re-installed. Mine however, is at a 1-2/7-8 o'clock position. Something doesn't seem correct and I am getting a bit frustrated. The tractor last ran 4 years ago while I was beginning the restoration. However, schooling, a career relocation, a wife, and a new (to us) home kept me from working on it. Can anyone help me out and direct me as to what to look for? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time and consideration.

If i understand you right, the magneto shaft notches aren't in the correct position. If that is the case, do as Joe says to get #1 cylinder to top dead center on the compression stroke. Next install your magneto, then take the mag. cap off and see which wire the rotor is pointing to. it should be just before one of the wires. Make that your #1 and in a clockwise direction put in the rest of your wires. It should be 1342. It should run and it will give the next mechanic a headache!

Be sure that the magneto you are installing has the correct firing order, 1-4-3-2, 1-3-4-2, 1-4-2-3. It must be the same as the firing order on the tractor or it will never start.

This is not a text book way fo doing it, but is should work to get your ZTU running. First you need to take the plug out of the #1 cyl hole. Slowly turn the crank over by hand. You may need the assistnace of your wife or a buddy for this next part, but as you turn the crank over place a finger loosely over the open plug hole. When you or your assitant feel air pressure pushing against out of the hole that will indicate that #1 is on the compression stroke. Continue to VERY slowly roll the motor over until the air no longer pushes out. This will indicate very near TDC.

Next move to the mag. With the mag in a vice put a plug wire with a plug into the spot for #1. This should be indicated on the cap. While keeping the plug grounded to the vice turn the rotor with a wrench slowly. This will be tough to do as they want to "take off" when the impulse trips. But if you are careful you should be able to stop the mag immediately after it fires the plug on #1. Being very careful not to advance the rotor of the mag any further take the mag out of the vice and over too the tractor turn the rotor backward until it lines up with the splines on the tractor. You should not have to turn it far. Put the mag down in the tractor and fire it up!

This may not be the best techincal way to get there, but it should be close enough to get it running, and you should be able to fine tune it from there.

Joe

Joe, Thanks for the advice as it worked perfectly. Sometimes following manuals is more complicated than they need to be. I really appreciate your time. Thanks again. Aaron
