Which tractor is better the G-1000 or the 4020? I have a 4020 and the neighbor has a G-1000 turned up to 140hp. What would you guys buy a 4020 or a G-1000. Neighbors G-1000 shot a rod through the engine any idea how much it would cost to fix?

Hello
I have to ask what you mean by better. I am assuming that you mean the better overall tractor. It really depends on what you plan on using the tractor for. As far as overall general farm use I would say that you would probably be better off with the 4020. Most are equipped with 3pt. and hydraulics and are nimble enough for loader work. Parts are also more redily avalible. If youre looking for a real workhorse I"d go for the moline hands down. If memory serves correct, most if not all of the G-1000s were wheatland tractors which means they were setup for open country field work which to most makes them unhandy where sharp turns or close quarters are present. As far as the engine work, A 504 MM shouldnt be to hard to find depending on what neck of the woods youre located. A 504 power unit could be dropped into a 1000 with little or no modification. Better yet, if just the block needs replacing you can leave half of the engine alone as there are only 2 cylinders per block. I am afraid to give a price as to how much it would cost to fix as the thrown rod could have damaged other parts of the engine. Seeing that you already own a 4020, I"d say a G-1000 would be a pretty good tractor to have around. Each tractor was a very good tractor in its own right. Hope this helps

I think you'll find the bell housing is larger on the 504 power unit and it won't go in the 1000 tractor.
