I have a 445 Util with manual steering. Would appreciate info and comments regarding what all I would need to buy and do to change to Power Steering. It has hydraulics and appears to have taps that would take the hydraulic lines which would have to be run to the front end. (I have a 445 Universal also, that I am NOT wanting to take parts from, but know what the PS system looks like, if they're the same), and can see that on that model the whole PS assembly looks to be part of the front end of the tractor. Anyone ever move to PS from Manual and know what all is involved? THanks

I added a Char Lynn power steering unit to my Brown Jet, all I had to do was cut the steering shaft, make 1 simple bracket, and run the hyd lines to it. Look on Ebay at CharLynn and at Behlen, I've got a Behlen unit for my GTB/LP, it's added in the same way, the Char Lynn unit is alot smaller than the Behlen. John

Thanks. That's a good suggestion if the factory setup gets to be too $$ or hard to find. I hadn't thought of going after-market in this way.

Adding power steering is not a simple as it might sound. If you can find a parts manual, you will see that there are several components ommitted from the front bolster assy when the tractor is ordered without PS. To buy these components you will likely be dollars ahead if you can find a bolster from a parts tractor that had PS and swap the bolsters. You will also need the PS control valve assy, the hydralic lines and the priority valve components for the hydraulic pump.

I recommend you study a parts manual to be certain you have located all the parts you will need before you start tearing into your tractor.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the reply and info. I had a hunch, just from eyeballing my Universal with PS on it, that there might be quite a bit to it, and from what you've said, there's even more than I imagined. Sounds like I might need to just buy a parts tractor with PS. Other than the length of the lines front to rear, do you know if the rest of the front end parts from a Universal would work on the Utility? I know that there are various hydraulic pumps/systems, so those valves you mentioned would have to be matched to the pump I'm using, I guess. Thanks again.

The Utility will have a different attachment for the tie rods than the Universal. I believe you will be able to swap the steering sector assy from a Utility bolster to a Universal bolster. There might also be a difference between the various steering shaft lenghts going into the the boltsters. Look in a parts book and do some measuring to verify what all you will need.

Thanks for your help. I'll do some homework on it.
