Hello, I looked at a MM ZB the other day and was wondering what is thought of them. What years made? Powerful? Parts availble? Is there a method of the names given to the MM line, I.E. "ZB" ? Any notorious problems or strong points? Mainly thinking of it for a restoration project with possibilities of ading a loader for light duty. Any comments would be appreciated. Thank You! Andy

Being a Moline fan my opinion is slightly biased, but the ZB is a good tractor. They were made from 1953 thru 1955. They have between 35 and 40hp. Parts are available from used part dealers as well as some new parts from Agco dealers. The ZB is the last in the "Z" line which began in 1937 with the introduction of the ZTU. These were produced thru 1948. The ZA was an update with a slight ly larger engine and restyled sheet metal. The ZB znd ZA are very similar except for the foot clutch and raised platform on the ZB. The engine in these tractors tend to "burn out" the valves. This is generally caused by the newer gasoline creating more heat than the older, softer valves can handle. A very good and affordable solution is to replace the valves with small block Chevy valves. I'm not sure of the sizes, but a good machine shop should be able to match up the sizes. My ZB has been a very good, dependable tractor. I have not "restored" it. I'm more of a rebuilder. It runs good and does well in local tractors pulls so I don't care if it is ugly. If I could find another one cheap I would buy it.

I'll start with a couple things. Made in early to mid '50s, foot clutch which is better for a loader than the ZA before it with a hand clutch, very small hydraulic pump and system and no live pto to use a pto hydraulic pump very successfully for a loader, no power steering unless it was added. You have to remember that back then the innovations that we take for granted now were just coming along and it was a good tractor for its time. Good luck.
