I have a M5 that has power steering on it...a little...seems like there is a very little there but not really any 98 percent of the time. I know its probably in the steering valve. Are there any common problems with them? Any thing special to look for?

Alan, before you blame the valve, check that your pump priority valve is working. Tee a valve in the pressure line to the valve (It will be the one marked IN on the blottom of the steering valve. Mom's M5 is sn. 59 and it has the Ross valve on it.) There should be 650-750 psi. there when you turn the steering wheel with the engine running.

The next thing to check is that there is no lost motion between the actuating pin and the groove in the sleeve on the steering worm shaft.

Thanks for the info. I will have to try that also. I did take the valve off, I think it is a Ross. There is some wear on each side of the actuating lever, I think enough to make a difference. When I took the lines off I could tell it wasnt going through the lines to the piston. Im sure it doesnt take much play that the valve wont work properly. The connecting sleeve for connecting the shafts in the housing seems to be ok for wear. Will have to check it out.
