Have been looking for a gasoline tank for an M5 or M602. Can a fuel tank from a diesel be used for gasoline? I think the return line is the only other difference for fittings, but will the gasoline remove the varnish in the tank from the diesel fuel? I dont want to have plugged fuel filters and lines every time I use it.

should work ok...as in any old tractor I would take the tank to a reputable rad shop and have it dipped and coated. This will diminish your chances of future problems. I do not recommend using just the coating you buy in a can without first boiling or dipping

I re-powered a '54 UTS diesel with a 406-4A gas engine and used the diesel tank with no problems.

I have also used the diesel tank on a Jet2 and a Jet3super when re-powering with gasoline engines and have had no problems. I've put several hours on the Jet2. As far as I can tell diesel fuel doesn't seem to create the varnish problems that gasoline does.

the UTS had the diesel return line plumbed into a tee at the bottom of the tank. (The tank itself was same as a gas version as far as I know.) Like you said, the later tanks have the return in the top. You will have to plug it.
