I rebuilt the power steering on my M5. Can anyone tell me how much effort there is supposed to be to turn the steering wheel? I do remember what our 830 Case was like but I never got to drive a MM with power steering before. I know it is power assist and not going to be like hydrostatic steering.

It seems to work better when the steering wheel is turned fast, but when you turn it slow its like it doesnt have much power, or works against its self. The valve-separator-is set correctly so that shouldnt be the problem. Wondering if it could be the relief valve, ( not getting pressure built up to work ).

Assuming that the pressure is within range, the most common problem causing hard steering is a worn pin that moves the control valve. The pin only moves thousandths normally, so if the pin is worn a few thousandths on each side, the pin doesn't move the control valve enough to make the power steering work correctly.

The pin and bushing I put in new, rebuilt the housing (sleeve machined in it, plus new shaft and yoke ). All new O rings. Connecting sleeve grove where pin rides was not wore exessive. Separator clearance is set at .040 after assembly and all end play was removed. Im wondering if it is not getting enough pressure to work properly.

well, connect a guage to the pressure line and see. I/T manual says it should jump to 650-750 psi. when you turn the steering wheel. Pressure should be about nothing when you are not turning the front wheels.

I'm thinking like JK2. You probably are losing some motion in the linkage. The only one I ever worked on that had that problem was a 335. The edges of the replacement pin actually drug in the groove in the input shaft. No clearance at all on either side of the pin so the valve had to move when the shaft moved back and forth.
