I have a 1960 M5 originally was lp but converted to gas. It has a 4206 and 4210 head on it. I may be restoring this one soon and am wondering what would work for heads? Can 4210s be used or are 4209s better. I hate to buy two heads...

Are you going to run as Gas or LP - LP typically had higher CR and LP config running gas could have detonation issues.

Assuming you have 336 ci engine with stock M5 pistons, the 4206 would be 9.65:1 CR (optional for M5 LP above 4000 ft altitude); 4210 would be 8.0:1 (standard for M5 LP Low Altitude, optional for M5 Gas above 4000 ft altitude); and 4209 would be 6.5:1 (standard for M5 Gas Low Altitude).

The stock M5 336 pistons show as "Cavity" pistons on one reference as opposed to "Flat top" pistons used in the 336A with 4230 series heads - if you use the Flat Top pistons, CR would be still higher by about 4%.

Most important thing in my mind would be not to mix heads with different CR and avoid detonation.

I plan on running gasoline when I restore it. We are at about 1870ft for altitude. I did kind of wonder when I saw the two different numbered heads. I know they normally dont mix them.

I would put another 4210 on it and have them matched.

4210s will work there are just a little less compression we had an M5 with 4210 heads on it and had one blow a head gasket was not sure if it was gasket or head until we took it down but had a pair of 4209 on the floor so went ahead and reworked them and put them on
