This is my first MM and took GTB to local plow day and in tough going runs great but slips out of 1 st gear. Where do I start. I have a repair manual coming.

Thanks for your help. If it is detent related that will be great. Have done business with Welters, a great asset to the MM world. That day I tried a tarp strap as I have seen that done but it was of no help. Yes it was a surprise when it happened thought the internals broke.

Doesn't that just drive you nuts! The first time it scares you and then it's a nuisance. My GB had the same trouble in second. I'd have to stop the tractor about every hundred yards and push it the rest of the way into gear. Fortunately the cure is likely an easy one. There are springs and small balls that fall into detents in the shift rail; the springs are likely broken. You need to remove the entire cover over the transmission, then the shift rail assembly, then the likely problem will be exposed. Springs and balls can be had from Welters 417-498-6496.

Mine has the same problem. I only use the 1st gear for pulling so I choose not to fix it. I added a longer bolt with a nut to the gas tank left hold down on top of the gauges. I made a loop on a piece of small braided cable using a small clamp and attached it to the shift lever with a hose clamp. When I want low gear I put the loop over the bolt. It solved my problem.
