Hello I have a 1964 jet star 3 The top end of the motor was redone before I bought it, but the oil press I have when running is around 12psi. I think I need to replace the rod bearings on the crank. Can you do this through the side panel without taking the motor apart. I have never replaced these bearings before. The old owner told me that they are stock size. The crank looks clean and smooth no lines or grooves.Thank you, Brian

Not sure if it's a tough job or not, but if you had it apart to the point where you could see the crank journals to inspect them, you should be able to answer your own question.

The oil pressure problem might be due to excessive clearance. You need to plastiguage those bearings (The old ones) to see if the clearance is excessive. If the clearance is excessive new bearings won't help much-At least they didn't on my Jetstar 2.

To Use Pastiguage, place a piece across the journal, then put the cap back on and torque it. Then remove the cap and compare the platiguage to the scale on the wrapper to get the clearance.

Also, on most MMs the oil pressure is adjustable. Have you tried turning in the screw on the oil pump?

I have turned in the screw on the oil pump. When started the gauge tells me about 30 psi and when working for an hour it goes to 12psi. Thank you, Brian

That much drop in pressure is usually oil that is too thin or excessive clearance.

In reply to your bearings question, it is not hard to do the rod bearings, but you should also do the main bearings, and that is not as easy.
E-mail me if you need more help..... .GUIDO.

What weight of oil are you using? Is it possible to put a gauge right out of the engine to check it or have you done that allready?

I use straight 30 weight. I don't use it in the winter months. The oil gauge is new when the old owner redid the top end. I have a 0-30 gauge I might install it in the oil pressure side of the pump. Thank you, Brian
