I am trying to remove the crankshaft from the crankcase. The front cover contains the water pump assembly, and also has the crankshaft captured. In trying to remove the cover plate. I have removed all the bolts I can find and still have not freed up the plate. I did find a bolt head behind the camshaft drive gear (see picture below). It has a keeper like a flat piece of sheet metal that is bent over to keep the bolt from coming loose.

Is this hiden bolt the last one to release the cover plate? If so, I can’t get a socket on it due to the opening in the gear not being large enough. If not part of the cover plate bolts, any suggestions on why the plate won't free up?

Also, the water pump impeller will not unthread from its drive shaft. I see that it is removed by screwing CLOCKWISE. I got a 1/8th of a turn then the bolt head stripped. Are these water pump impellers available if I have to destroy this one to get it offThanks for your help.

Jerry,

I finally got the water pump impeller off this afternoon. That was a booger and I ruined the nut surface doing it. This did allow me to pull the camshaft gear from the cam and I found the two bolts behind it holding the front cover on. The cover is off and the crankshaft is out now.

I pulled the govenor and still can't get the cam out. I can't get the oil pump out of its port. It seems to be stuck in the case. Is the oil pump drive keeping the cam in?

Thanks for your help.

You need to remove the Cam gear to expose that bolt. The gear has to come off anyway.

you need to remove camshaft to get the other bolts out. The govenor will need to be removed to get cam out.
