I am attempting to restore a 54 U. I am trying to remove the rear hubs. Ive heated them and used the biggest gear puller I could get my hands on. Can anyone give me any tips other than use a bigger hammer. Maybe I just have to heat it up more. Im at a loss.

i have never had to do this yet, but i would use a tractor and good chain and give it a sharp jerk.i think this should get it mov ing.get the chain kinda snug with not too much slack and pop the clutch. keep your wits and remember safety first.

Well here is how I got mine off of my 1945 UTU.

It has the big nut holding the wheel on the axle. I used spray Kroil and heat on the cast wheel. I did not put heat directly on the axle, ever. nothing moved for a long time.

I then used a 12 ton bottle jack with the ram against the end of the axle and a chain around the base of the jack and through the cutouts in the wheel. With tension on the jack I used more heat and more Kroil and tapped on the cast wheel with a hammer. It took a couple of hours, but it popped lose finally.

Without the bottle jack with tension on the axle I do not think I could ever have gotten it off. Just don't get in a hurry with the jack or you could break something. Heat and your favorite penetrating oil is most effective.

The other side had a leaking seal so the axle splines were well greased, and it slid right off.

Is the tractor still runnable??

I've just loosened the hub bolts - then taken the tractor out for a spin up and down the road ditches on an incline tapping one brake and the other every now and then to break them loose on my 6030 JD...

If it's not runnable - you may have a lot of work ahead. Try to get some penetrating oil in there, heat and cool it, and maybe put sideways pressure on the rim - one side, then the other.
