... I found a tractor that I am excited about. I can purchase it for 3250$ with a loader, nice paint, a 6' - 3point bush mower, a 9 foot back blad, and a 9 ' box blade all for that price.

It is a Diesel Moline M5 with a loader (full hydrualic) and nice paint.

The say it wont' start real nice right now (gelled fuel), but was in use last fall. This is in weather where we are hitting 10 degrees at night right now, but now are incresing temps to 25-35 degrees during the day.

How can I check the runability of it? I am going to bring ether and a battery, but I don't think they plug it in ever. Short of a propane heater and a tarp I don't know what to do.

Should I risk it on honesty for the good deal and just buy it?

I had a gut feeling something might be wrong with it...when people pull the "we have other people looking at it" and similar tricks, they are generally trying to cover something up and make a quick sale. Also just because they are 40 somethings with a nice house doesn't mean they aren't going to twist the truth a little in order to sell you something. Age and potential wealth have nothing to do with honesty. Heck some of the dirt-poorest people are the most honest. Next time just remember to thoroughly inspect whatever it is your buying, and don't base your decision on what the owner tells you or what the price is.

I don't quite follow you...so this guy that called about your baler had supposedly already bought the tractor that you paid for last night? And claimed to have a bill of sale, despite the fact he hadn't paid? So on hearing this, you went and picked the M5 up? And now this guy has gone and called the police because he thinks you have, in essence, stolen it from him? Wow that is crazy...if I am reading that right, lucky you went and got it when you did! Imagine the fuss if he had gone and picked it up!

BEFORE YOU SPEND $$$$ ON THIS TRACTOR in reply to AtlasHayCo, 02-28-2008 19:44:34
If someone before you had bought the tractor and has a signed contract, he may be able to execute the contract and you will lose the tractor. If they just had an oral contract, that is harder to prove.

If someone pulled that on me, I know I would go after it if I really wanted the tractor. First buyer should have also made a token down payment, I would have.

It is more the fault of the seller to sell it to two persons, but you are involved now!

Only problem with the buyer is that when he made a "token" down payment he asked that the check not be cashed. So he left a check, I don"t think that the amount matters in this case, and asked for them not to cash it. It wasn"t half the tractors price.

It was just weird.

So I went and seen a Moline M5 Diesel last night and paid for it....

This morning I received a call about a Round Baler that I have for sale- At 7:30 am

Follow me this is going somewhere.

The man had some questions about his tractor powering this round baler. He has a 60 Hp tractor, and the round baler is rated for a minimun of 65 hp like I displayed in the advertisment (a 851 NH).

I explained that I used my 65 Hp moline M602 that I have and it worked ok.

He said wow I have a M5 and they are almost the same - besides you could stop the bale early with less horsepower.

He explained that he was switching from square bales, and that he had no inside storage

I explained that he may want to have a loader, because the 851's bales don't shed water the best and I would stack and tarp them.

He explained that he had a M5 Diesel with a loader.

I said funny I bought one just like it last night - paid in full.....

YOU COULD HERE HIS JAW HIT THE FLOOR THROUGH THE PHONE AS HE ASKED WHERE I BOUGHT IT, and I confirmed it was the same tractor that he did not pay for yet - nor was it at his residence.

He quickly said I guess I am not buying your baler then..... .

Wow I had my local hauler on the phone in 5 minutes - we were there at 10:30 am

We loaded it, and were on our way.

I got home and unloaded, and b.s'd with a neighbor and the hauler guy.

Then I went inside, and Crazy guy actually called the COPS???? He says I had a bill of sale - though he didn't pay for it - so I paid but his little note is supposed to mean something (all private parties).

Small world crazy stuff!

Well I went through with it for a little less than posted.....

I work all gears, loader picks up the front end with the small and large rams, and three point moves up with me on it (220 lbs). Though the 3 point didn't reset at the top on its own.

Started nicely when warm. sounded ok, seemed to smoke more than my other moline diesel....

Should be nice. New fronts. 18.4/34

Remember what I said in my first post...it may only SEEM like a good deal. What happens if you buy it, and it turns out that the tractor needs major work? As in hundreds or thousands of dollars worth? Make sure you thoroughly check the tractor out, and get it running before you even THINK about making a decision. I tend to agree with Howard, the price does seem kinda high...remember too that you can always make an offer on it. The worst that can happen is the owner doesn't take it. And don't fall for "we have lots of people wanting to look at it". I have seen sellers use this tactic so many times, it's not even funny.

Sounds sort of high to me.

I don"t know what the loader is worth, but I saw a super nice M5 like new on LP a few months ago for asking price of $2000.

I gave less than $1000 for that one I posted a picture of a while back...

If it were me I would not risk it...not saying they aren't being honest, but do you want to see $3250 gone into a tractor that might turn out to be a lemon? While it might seem like a good deal, a loader, a nice paint job, and a bunch of implements do not make the tractor. I would personally take a tractor in excellent mechanical condition over one that has a nice paint job and implements but may not run and operate the greatest.
If the tractor won't start because of supposedly gelled fuel, flush the fuel tank and system, and make sure it is filled with clean, fresh fuel. If the owner won't do this for you, ask if you can do it yourself. If he refuses to let you do this, I would be a bit suspicious. Have a fully charged battery on hand, and a can of ether, as you mentioned. Also check all the fluids in the tractor, such as oil, antifreeze, hydraulic fluid etc., looking for water or abnormalities. Should everything check out OK and you get the tractor running, make sure the loader and 3PTH operate normally, and the tractor runs/drives/shifts as it should. Basically just check and make sure the tractor is in the condition you want it to be. If you are inexperienced and aren't sure what to look for, take along someone more experienced who can help you out and give advice. The last thing you want to do is buy a tractor you think is a good deal, and then have to pour more money into it. Good Luck!

Ok that is what I was thinking... They are giving me the "5 people want to come see iT" story, but I am sure that this is true = could be quite the deal!@

I am going tonight to go work/look at it... I will get it going and check it out....

By later on you will all know what happened.

I have to scramble for the good deal I guess.

2000.00 for a nice straight running 65 hp m5 doesn't seem that high to me. Take a close look at it! It doesn't seem to be all beat up and used like a bull dozer. 1000.00 bucks for a good straight loader that was made by swartz same as l 800 molines will fit just about any oliver or moline tractor. The rest is free stuff. VS 25000.00 plus for a Kubota tractor by itself. I wonder how well it will be holding up after it has 35 plus years on it?
