M5 diesel

I use an M5 diesel for routine chores on my small farm, just because it was the cheapest cat II tractor I could scrounge up a few years back. I've grown to like the old beast, so I'd like to keep it going. Everything, except the tach, works well, but it won't start without ether (even hot), and it dies out if rpm falls below about 400 (a guess, since no tach!). Heads are good, valves are in spec, got new head gaskets properly torqued, and new metering heads on the injectors; I found 60-over pistons and no ridge at the cyliner tops when I pulled the heads to check the valves, so I assume it got rebored in the recent past. My guess now is that the injector pump is sufficiently worn that it can't make pressure at low speeds. Anyone know of a modest-cost source for a refurbished hydraulic head for the American Bosch PSB4A pump? The general response from inquiries I've made locally is "Gee, those are pretty much extinct". I'm told that the M670 Super shares a lot of hardware with the M5. There's a local auction coming up with a supposedly half-decent 670 diesel. Any experiences with reliability & parts availability for the 670? If it runs OK, any opinions on what would be a reasonable price as a farm machine? The wallet is still almost thin enough to pass light.

Botsch parts are not cheap you can convert it over to a Roosta Master. Welters could supply you with the used parts you need.670 parts are mostly the same some differance in the TA and trans gear ratios.670s have the Roosta Master pumps on them as well as late model M-5s.Welters #417-498-6496 talk to Glenn.

I have a psb pump that was rebuilt three years ago that I just pulled because I am building a puller and would sell it for $350. It was rebuilt by DC Diesel in Bloomfield Iowa and cost $700. It probably has 150 hours on it since I rebuilt it. If interested, Email me or call me after 5pm for more info. Tim Stephenson
