My '47 "R" is not shifting right. It is stuck in 1st gear (to the left of Reverse, where it should not be). That is the only gear it will go into. What is the hang up (shifter fork)? Any way to get to it without taking the top trans. cover off? Thanks for the help!!

Nope - no way to get to it unless you pull up transmission cover. When you do this - it also pulls up the gear shift lever.

Sounds like you have a worn shifter fork or one of the ball detents is worn When you get the trans cover off - you will see two rods going across the transmission. These have ball detents in them and are what move and lock the shifter forks depending on what gear you select.

Don't be afraid to pull the top - it really isn't that big of a deal - just takes some time. When you get it open - put everything in neutral - (no gears will be meshed) and assembly is simple - slide your gearshift back into the cup/socket that you lifted it out of. All of this is pretty obvious when you get it apart. You can make a new gasket from gasket material or just use some quality RTV sealant.

Now if something is worn - you'll have to replace that part - but there are plenty of used good parts available. Try the minneapolis-moline web site at "www.minneapolis-moline.com" Tony, the webmaster has a section dedicated to parts. If you need help from a manual - let me know.
