I had a battery blowup last week when I tried to start it. Battery was probably old, and I have been charging it when it sits a while. What causes this? Should I check the voltage regulator or just a fluke? Anyone else have this happen? It tends to scare the $&*# out a ya.

Most times when batteries blow up it is because of arcing on a post ingniting fumes from the battery. There are several reasons your battery can be giving of fumes, charging short in the battery, or sometimes just putting a load on them can cause it. Usually arcing is caused by lose connections whether it is the post clamp or bad ground connection next to the battery or those 2 bolt clamp on replacement ends will arc sometimes.
