Is an M5 for me???

I have been shopping for ever for an all purpose tractor to use on 22 wooded acres in the mountains of West Virginia. Use will be mainly pulling loads of firewood up a steep woods road. But also snow plowing, road maintenance with a back blade, plowing and tilling a truck garden and maybe some bush hogging.

I've seen an M5 that looks nice and may fit my budget. All I know is its gas, PS, 5 gears/2 range transmission with a front end loader. I would be buying this long distance.

Can anyone give me a quick rundown on attributes of this tractor that would be good or bad for my purposes? I know it will have plenty of horses. Does it have decent manuverability? Live/indep. PTO? Draft control on the 3-point?

Did this unit come with some type of torque amplifier that could be trouble on that steep hill? Are the brakes a weakness? Or transmission slipping out of gear?

Thanks very much for your comments.

I have two MM M5's. Both are Diesel. One is early 1960, the other a 1962. I strongly believe they are a great tractor for most middle applications. Things I suggest you consider are the following;

1. Early diesel models have the American Bosch Fuel injection system...generally more expensive to repair...later models have the Roosa Master system, cheaper and more readily repairable.

2. Diesel is great, but hard to start in the winter...definately have to pre-heat and use ether. Need good batteries with lots of cranking power.

3. Amplitorc low range should not be used in cold conditions, or in downhill runs.

4. Parts are a bit difficult to come by...one of your other correspondents mentioned Welters Farm Supply. I have used them, and they are great. Best prices and very helpfull. Very few of these tractors in wrecking yards...those that are seem to be there for a reason.

5. If you decide to purchase an M5, I have all the operator's, maintenance and parts manuals. I can make you a copy for a nominal fee.

Good luck with your purchase!

Ralph

I have an M-5 with an international 2000 loader on it. I have owned it for going on 10 years and used it a great deal. It is a brute for moving large round bales or lifting dirt and snow. My biggest problem with this tractor is it makes a very bulky loader. The tractor does not have enough power steering to work well, it is very long nosed, and is just a brute to handle compared to other loaders. It does have live pto and hydro, it has a good t/a and decent brakes. If you have further questions you can e-mail me

We used to own a M-5 LP burner back in the 60's and it was a good tractor.It had a narrow front with good brakes and would turn on a dime.It played with a MM 3x16 mounted plow.It had live PTO and we never had any problems with the Ampli-Torc.They stay in gear.Stay away from a M-5 Diesel.A decent M-5 Gas or LP should be worth $3500+.Welters Farm Supply at Verona,MO will have any new or used parts you would need.

What is wrong with a M-5 diesel? Very good motor. This motor was used in the 5 star though M-670 super. Very easy on fuel.

Good tractor The T/A caosts in low range you have to keep it in high range when going down a hill or ride the brakes. good brakes, live pto, draft control never seen one pop out of gear. If this is the one on ebay I think it is to much money, maybe not if it was a local tractor but if you have to haul it very far it is to much. the reserve is 4700. Very good tract
