I need some info on this tractor. It is a 283A-4 serial # 01925378. The nearest serial #'s I could find were all late 40's and early 50's vintages. I am wondering if this tractor is collectable and worth restoring. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Larry is correct on the 1953 UTI (which means Model U, Tractor, Industrial) The L denotes that it has a shuttle shift transmission. The shuttle shift allowed for rapid shifting from forward to reverse with both having six speeds from about one to fifteen mph, both backwards and forwards. If this transmission works perfectly it is desirable for collectors as well as for use. Unfortunately they usually had loaders or other construction applications which means UTIL's trannys as well as the rest of the tractor are often worn out.

Your serial number shows it to be a 6-Volt. From 1948 to 1953 MM made 773 6-Volt UTIL's. Then from 1953 to 1957 MM made 635 12-Volt UTIL's. They are somewhat rare, but not that rare. 12-Volt model's usually start easier, but a properly working 6-Volt is a very fine machine.

Good Luck with your tractor.

Greg, you supplied the engine serial number. Look on the right side of the transmission housing above the belt pulley (if equipped) for the tractor id plate and serial number. You should be able to identify it from those numbers on the serial number link on this page (left column under Research and info)
