Gary,

I think everyone is sort of talking around your quandary. I assume you are talking about the same tractor in both your posts. If your tractor serial number tag starts with an 038, then your tractor is a 1950-1952 UTN. The reason it just says U on the tag is because that is just the way M-M did it. It could be a UTS, UTE, or UTU, it quite probably will just say U. The front end is most likely a Schwartz if it has that tag on it. Your front pedestal should have the number 10A1691 cast in it. Interestingly M-M used the same front pedestal on both the UTE and the UTN. I've seen after market wide fronts hung on UTU's and the cast pedestal just hung down there, minus the hubs and wheels of course, really looked stupid. At least yours looks sort of factory. Are you in the part of the country where they would use a tractor with a single front such as an area that raises spuds, or sugar beets, vegetables or maybe where they did a lot of furrow irrigating? Doesn't really matter cause you've got a UTN.

I saw a tractor at Aumann's Thanksgiving sale this past weekend in southcentral IL that had a single front tire. However, when you took a look at the serial tag, it was actually a UTU that someone had put a single front on it. I didn't watch it sell or how they described it, but hope this helps in some way.

Briefly, Gary, the UTU is the tractor with two narrow front wheels (tricycle). UTN is with single front, UTE is adjustable wide front, and UTS is a standard tread tractor. If you need more information, I can probably give you a link to the information
