Dip stick rust

I have a '53 U and store it in a quanset that is basically shut-up all winter and gets very damp inside (moisture condenses down off the walls). I noticed that the U now is starting to get rust on the dip stick. I was alarmed, but the mechanic told me it was nothing to worry about and it was due to the damp conditions it is stored in. Is this something to worry about? I thought the breathers would allow any moisture to escape and prevent any from getting in. I was told to loosen the oil plug down to the last thread and water, if any in the crank case would drip out. Does this make sense?

Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

It is good practice to check the crankcase as you described for moisture after a tractor has been sitting. I learned a while back on a 400 gas farmall to check for water in the crankcase. We pulled it in the building to do some rewiring and it a matter of a month or so it was locked up. I buy a lot of old tractors that have been sitting around and the first thing I do (for molines) is grab a 9/16 wrench and a 5/8 (for the rear end) and check for water. The moisture will condense inside the motor much the same way it condenses inside your building. Our building sweats like this maybe twice in the fall and twice in the spring. A little moisture in the oil want hurt anything unitl you pull it up through your oil pump. So to be safe crack the bottom open before you fire her up.
