I am looking into a trade and thought that you guys would be the best people to offer advice. I have a pair of Avery model A's that I could make a realy nice tractor out of. But I found a 445 MM it has 3pt pto power steering and is a deisel. The jugs are craked though. The man who has it said he would throw in a gas engine, but it also needs rebuilt. I want it to use mainly. Should I be willing to pay boot or try to trade even.
Any advice would be helpful.
BTW how hard are MM parts to find. Thanks

A 445 MM Diesel is one rare tractor.Believe it or not there is one for sale in SW MO.I saw it in an area weekly paper (this week) with rebuilt engine, good paint, good condition. He calls it a collectors item so knows its rare.We used to have a 445 LP MM years ago.

Jeremy, Any 445 Diesel is a highly collectible MM. But finding parts for 206 diesel engines can be very difficult because they made so few. I looked through my 445 parts catalog and the cylinders on a 445 diesel are unique. They carry a different part number than the gas cylinders. This usually means they are not interchangable. If only the outside of the cylinders is cracked you can have them welded. If the cylinder wall is cracked or busted I've heard of people resleeving the broken cylinder. You probably don't know yet what the inside looks like. I'm assuming the engine is still assembled. On the other hand though, the 445 would be a much better tractor for general use than the Avery. It's much more powerful and the 3pt will make it worth every penny compared to the Avery in my MM biased opinion.
I would try to trade even up considering how difficult it might be to find parts. I'd only include the gas engine in the deal if you're considering changing it over to gas. Hope this helps you out. Good Luck!
Brian

I have the jugs off of an RTU and I believe they would fit the 445 as well as a Z,ZB,RTI,RTU and so on(as long as you don't go bigger than a 206 motor I believe)I also have some parts for the 445--I do not know what all I have in that line though.

Keith, just a note, RTU cylinders (jugs) will not fit a 445. They are two completely different engines. Very little (if anything) is interchangeable between them.
By the way, what would you want for the RTU jugs? Are they standard bore or oversize?

Brian

When you boil it all down, you have an Avery that needs work, and he has a 445 that needs work. If you were primarily a collector, I would say its a matter of personal preference- but since you say it will be mainly for "using", it certainly seems like a good trade, since the 445, especially as equipped, is a lot more tractor than the Avery's. What I don't know, however, is how hard it will be to get the jugs that you need- can anyone out there help in that department, either with parts available, or info on what other applications use the same parts?

Jeremy, If the 445 is a factory diesel, it is a pretty rare tractor. MM only built 190 of the Universal and 25 of the Industrial diesel version of the 445 in 1958.
