Have a 1952 U MM. that I pulled with last summer. Wasn't very impressive. Seems first gear is a little fast for the hp. Bought a M5 MM propane parts tractor this winter. Would like to put blocks, pistons, and heads on my U. What kind of compression would this have? Would it be too much for running regular gas?

Joel,
M5 blocks and pistons will fit on your U tractor
however the rods in he M5 are .107 shorter in length than the U moline rod. This makes the M5 rod not interchangeable it has a different rod bearing size. Moline did make a spacer for the block in different thickness. You would need about .125 spacer to use the M5 blocks and pistons. The heads are the difference in compression. If you were going to a 4209 head your tractor might run alright on regular gas. You will not get the power that you are looking for. I would suggest that you get the M5 cam ground to high torque low speed and use it in the U. Use propane intake and exhaust from the M5 on the U as it will bolt right on with no modification. Use the 4210 heads but buy very high octane fuel. Feel free to write back with more questions. Good luck. Want to sell any of the M5 parts?

Thank you for the info. Are the spacer plates still available from dealers? If not what other sources would you suggest? Starter is missing on the M5. The U is converted to 12 volt. When I get this engine together the U will have more cid and have higher compression. Will the starter handle it? If not, what would you suggest for a starter? Thank you.

No one knows how many ZTU's are still in existance. One would be fairly rare in my area. The youngen asked for input and I think it would be right to give him accurate info as Jim did. He can make up his own mind as to how rare it is.

I didn't have any luck switching a 670 lp to gas cracked both heads. I was using it the feild though. If your close to MO might be interested in the rest of the M5. If your over 150 miles I'm not interested.

Galen, I'm from nw Ia. But I was wondering are propane pistons different from the gas pistons? Motor is stuck so I may need different pistons anyway. Thank You

If your M5 has 4210 heads, std bore, and pistons you will have approx 8:1 comp. I agree with Galen too high for reg gas in the field and I think too high any where. MM used to make a spacer to go under the block which would lower compression approx .5 per spacer. If available you might get ratio you want this way.

Question.....On those spacers the go under the block on a MM U to lower the compression. Where they ever listed in a parts book?
I run a tractor pull. A built U had spacers under the block. I put him in the open class for that reason. [I do believe he took a trophy in the open class] Don L.

The only reason I would use the 1/2 spacer is for more stroke, not lower compression. MM has too many heads available to lower the compression that way. The volume in the cylinder isn't heated enough any way. All they guys like high compression, I haven't had any luck with it. Once you get above 7.5:1 on gasoline at these low rpm's you have too much trouble with spark plugs cracking.
