I need some help Minneapolis - Moline experts!

Two questions?
1) I am about to replace the clutch pilot bearing . Should I pack the are behind the seal with grease or just smear some grease on the seal?
2) Is it possible that my U302 never had the wire that holds the water pump bearing in place? I have cleaned and looked several times and cannot find a hole in the casting for it.
Thanks in advance for your thoughs and sugesstions.

Alex

The water pump bearing is held in place by a wire that is slid in the small hole in the side of the casting. The bearing assembly also has a grove in it for this wire. The old wire may have rusted away or if the pump has ever been repaired it may have been left out.

The pilot bearing on most tractors are sealed bearing. Putting grease behind it doesn't help the bearing any at all. As far as the water pump there should be a snap ring that holds the bearing in place probably on the radiator side of the pump.
