Governor troubles MM R

I am hoping someone here can help me. Yesterday we had atractor pull here and I decided to try it. I have a 1948 MM model R that runs really good and thought I would use it. We rake hay with it and it does fine at that but when I hooked to the sled and opened the throttle it never revved up like I thought it should. Matter of fact, I got beat by a JD 420 by about 25ft. When looking at the governor and opening the throttle without a load the rod works fine and they seem to open but with a load it didn't seem to work. Of course I wasn't looking at it when I was hooked as I was trying to watch the track.

Any suggestions or info on what to look for to see if the governor is bad or just way out of adjustment?

thanks!!!
Jeff

You can pull the governor off the tractor and spin the unit over by hand. While doing this, hold tension on the speed lever and see if it makes the throttle linkage lever actuate. Chances are that the internal linkage inside the governor is worn. This keeps the governor from properly actuating the carb. throttle plate. The governor only has so much movement that it can make internally to actuate the throttle plate. If there is excessive play internally, this has to be overcome first before it will move the throttle. Thus low power can result.

Also, weak valve springs can also rob you of power in this tractor.

Motec Engineering in Tipton, Indiana, can rebuild governors. I do not have his number handy. But the owner's name is Matt Gall. Try a post on the MM website...www.minneapolis-moline.com Maybe someone will have his number handy or he may be listed in the parts souces section.
