Hi, I have a 1947 M-M UTI with a generator. I am using an 8v battery. I am not sure if the generator is charging or charging enough. The amp meter shows the needle straight up--neither charging nor discharding. When I turn on the lights, it shows discharge for a second and then the needle is straight up. I assume this is accurate since I have had to recharge the battery a couple of times.

I have a voltage meter and I was wondering how do I check either the regulator or generator to see if it is charging and/or how much? Is there a way to determine if the regulator needs to be changed out or the generator?

Thanks a bunch.

You can see the tractor at the link below.

Jon,

Your heading is correct, you need to check your generator and regulator. It sounds like your system is not charging enough. To check get your motor running at about half speed or better and then take a jumper wire and connect the Bat and Gen terminals at the regulator. If your ammeter shows a charge then, your regulator is bad. If it doesn't show charge then ground the F terminal at the generator. Once again, if it then shows charge you need a new regulator, if not then the problem is in the generator itself.
Before doing any of that make sure all connections are clean and tight. And, don't go haphazardly connecting various terminals to see what happens, a sure recipe for disaster. Hope this helps.
Jim
