How much transmission noise is normal wear in 52 year old tractor. This is a 49 UTS. Jus put in 13 gal. new GL1 140. Didn't help. It's not any more noisey in one gear than another. Just noisey overall. It increases with engine speed. This is my first MM. Are U's usually noisey or does it depend on the wear? Need your opinions, Thanks

Hello,
Good luck on your new tractor. Some of the older tractors had noisy rear ends, i have a 39 that is real bad, a 46 that is kinda, and a 52 that is fairly quiet, my 53 ub is just like the 52. So i would say if you put in the new grease, and arent going to go out and farm 800 acres with it it will be fine, or if your going to pull it, just make sure you put a tarp strap around the gear shift to hold it in low, and you will be fine.
I wouldnt suggest tearing it all apart to find nothing but a little wear. Of course on the other hand you could have a bearing out. What kinda shape is the tractor in in over all shape.
Hope this help
Shawn

Shawn,

The rest of the tractor seems to be very good, just noisey. Twenty-five to thirty of us will start a 100 mi. road trip to Ozark, Ark Tractor Show, tomorrow at 7:00 a.m. for 4 days and 3 nights. I'm sure I'll find out if it is anything serious.
I'll post in about a week, how it went.
Thanks,
Nug

I agree with Shawn, Wow do those MM U's have one heck of a fast road gear in them! I don't even have a street long enough here in town to open mine all the way up to full speed. Enjoy those MM's guys.
I have a 1950 U. What a fun tractor, with a personality all of it's own.
As much as I hate to, I will be selling this tractor in the near future. (Too many toys!)
Keep watch in the Nebraska classifieds adds and or photo adds on this site for it.
