Dirtracker,

You mentioned that you had rebuilt the Ampli-Torc on your U302.

I have a '69 U302 Super, and the unit is slipping in the higher gears. I changed the gear oil, set the torc lever to 75#, but it'll slip up a 15% grade in 3rd. It gets used alot (has an Oliver 2250 loader), so I don't want to possibly do more damage. I've been tilling with it, but in low range only. I'm a decent mechanic, have the original shop manual, but no garage. I'll have to rig support dollies and split it on plywood. I can get the parts from a local dealer, but some may have to be used. I realize that the oem parts were exactly milled, and the used ones have to be almost perfect. What do you think people, piece of cake? If I don't repair it myself, I'll probably sell it to someone who will, and replace it with a smaller 4x4 (gasp!) import. Thanks everybody!

Are you sure the AT is causing the problems. We have worked on lots of MM's and only have seen 2 with bad high sides, can happen tho. You do not have to remove the hyd pump and the shaft to work on these. Ask us for more info if needed. Dale and Doug.

I know it isn't the clutch, so if it isn't the AT, what could it be? When I changed the gear oil and flushed it, I extracted rather large tabs of metal which looked like they could have come from the drive plate or roller springs and clips. The unit slips and makes a racket (best described as like loud engine pre-ignition) when I start out in road gear, and when I let off the throttle considerably, the noise subsides and it catches. I then have to ease it up to speed. Any ideas?

BTW Dirtracker, the shop manual doesn't say that you have to remove the hydo pump.

Thanks to all for the help!

Hi Marc. Sounds like the clutch material is worn off the disc's, with that much pressure and good disc's it shouldn't slip. I used a bottle jack under the rear half and a floor jack under the front half, clamped a block under each side over the front axle so it wouldn't tip from side to side and split the old girl. Its pretty easy. An IT manual helps. My low side was bad on mine, the rollers were broken and the springs mashed. (not assembled properly by a previous mechanic) You will have to remove the hydraulic pump and the live shaft that runs from the flywheel to the hydraulic pump out the rear and then you can split the tractor, it will take a little time but its pretty easy. An IT manual explains everything with text and quite a few photo's. I havent had time to check out this board as often as normal, but it rained last night so the hay baling stopped for a littly while. If you have any questions just ask. Have FUN.

you probably have broken drive tabs on the clutch plates. when those break off, you are only driving with the remaining good plates, the broken ones just act as spacers. it's not too hard to fix when you get it split. the cage may be worn, but i've had good luck just filing it smooth.
