i'm restoring a 38 kta, with a kea engine. the tractor starts good if it is pulled, and sometimes it will start ok by hand. but i've noticed that the magneto doesn't always load up and spark when it is turned over by hand. i sure would appreciate any tips or ideas

Sir,
Is the Magneto a MJB-4A? If it is, I can email you the American Bosch overhaul list and repair instructions from twin city manuals. It sounds like the impulse coupling is stuck. first try a little spray lube and make sure the oil is not solidified in the case. I know a fellow in Pierz MN that works on magnetos and he is excellent with this model. I also have a few parts for these units myself. AB built about the best magneto there was. The phrase,"designed buy geniuses to be operated by baboons" fits their units. I have three tractors with the same unit and two have been in my family since my dad was a pup. They normally need serviced about every ten years with a point filing and condenser replacement.

i have the fairbanks morse mag. i have tried some penetrating oil but it didn't seem to help. i'll probably have to disassemble it and clean it up. i'm not far from pierz and i could use a good contact. any and all help is appreciated.

Sir,
You can call Joe Faust at 320-468-6051 or write to him at 26768 193rd street, Pierz MN 56364. He currently has six of my magnetos for complete rebuild. Four of those mags are Fairbanks Morse and the remainder are American Bosch. He carries a vast supply of varied tractor parts too.

I'm no mag expert, but it sounds like the impulse on the magneto is not working (tripping)reliably. Was it cleaned and inspected when you overhauled the engine?
