Looking at a stuck 49 UTU. Don't know how bad it is inside. Want it to build a puller. Can a 403 engine from a G be put in a UTU? If so, how difficult is it and what problems are there? Thanks.

None of you guys told him how you got the top water manifold hooked back to the radiator. I used the U manifold and a radiator inlet from a U diesel. You can't mount the temp gauge in its normal place or its cable will hit the hood. It has to go in the side flange where the pipe plug is.
There has to be other ways/combinations of parts to do this. How did you guys do it?
Also, does a G engine use a ball bearing in the flywheel? I had the wrong one or something and ended up having an adapter made to fit the U pilot bushing into the 403 flywheel.

keep only the bottom block from u switch crank and everything above it.no grinding ,watch for timeing gears you mmight have to take gear off u crank and put it on g crank, count teeth on cam and crank there are some only 2 diffrent that will mesh togeher but eng will not run. you might have to get or make spacer at front crank seal.

You probably should check the rules at the pulls you are planning on going to.Most of the antique pulls call for STOCK BLOCK for the tractor you are pulling. Good Luck!

The mounting flanges of a 403 and the UTU (283) are different. Therefore the 403 will not bolt to the U trans. When MM put the 403 motor in the G, they made an adapter casting to connect the 403 to the basic U trans. If you realy want the 403 motor on your U, you can build a 403 using the UTU crankcase and but all of the 403 hardware into the engine.

I think you are wrong about the 403 not bolting to a U transmission. I have done it plenty of times. It is the 425cid 6 cylinder diesel motor that has a bigger mounting flange. The 403 and 283 have the same bolt pattern. The starter on the 403 crankcase it machined further out than the 283. You will have to grind the starter nose to get it to fit. You will also have to use the bigger starter ring gear and grind a little out of the transmission housing to make it fit.

My mistake! I did not allow for grinding. We had a 403 on a UTS for many years back in the '60s which was never modified for a starter. We would park it on a hill and let gravity do the work or my dad would hand crank it. Which was not an easy task with the skinny heads on it. Later in life, we would build the engines with the U crankcase so it would look original and all of the equipment would work.
