I have MM 5 Star which runs fine until I disconnect a battery terminal. Then it stops. Does this mean the generator is not working? The
battery is dead on occasion in the tractor and thats what started me down this trail. How do I figure out if it is the generator or regulator? All help and suggestions appreciated. Any place one can get a new regulator and generator (or rebuilt).

Thanks,

John

In my experience, on a vehicle with a generator when the battery is disconnected it will shut off because I believe the generator needs a small amount of voltage in order to be able to generate. If you had an alternator, the vehicle would keep running if you disconnected the battery. I have done this on an alternator equipped car. I converted my 5 Star to an alternator. It charges better, has an internal regulator, is more reliable and easier to get parts for.

I'm not sure, but I think it is the alternator that needs a little juice to operate, and generator doesn't. But no matter- I agree that a conversion to alternator would be better. Get the one wire type, so it has internal regulator. To test your generator, you have to have a working ammeter. Regulator will have 3 posts labeled "bat", "gen" (or "arm") and "fld" (for "field"). If they are not labeled on the regulator, follow the two wires that go directly to the generator, and the gen post on the generator will be the larger of the two (also, the field post often has an "F" stamped near it). To test, get the tractor running, then short the Field post to ground and run a jumper wire from the bat to gen posts on regulator. If you now show a charge on the ammeter, which should increase as you increase RPM's, the generator is working and regulator is bad. The regulator could be out of adjustment, and in my experience, the best way to adjust is to remove, throw in trash can, and install new one.
