My '56 U engine vibrates at full throttle. If I back it off 2-300 rpms it stops. Does anyone know why this may be happening. It has good compression, good idle and good governor control. The power is "right on" too. Thanks

Something that I have observed with other older engines (not MM necessarily) is that vibrations will develop at certain RPM's. The engine can run faster or slower than the problem speed and not have any noticable vibration. I have been told that this can be a flywheel flaw, and that it doesn't take much of a flaw to cause the vibration. In newer engines with more precise balancing, I would speculate unmatched cap screws, etc, but the engineering on these older engines wasn't that close, and the speeds aren't that high (in relation to 4-5K like some newer engines). I'd consider the clutch/flywheel assembly.

Another guess would be the spring tension on the individual valve springs. If one of them wasn't capable of opening the valve as quickly as the others under higher engine speeds, it might affect that one cylinder enough to create the vibration.

Thank you for answering my question. Sounds good to me.
