What is the ampli-torque and what is it's purpose? How does it operate? Is it similar to the old torque converters on IH 656's? There is a MM670 LP gas for sale near here and it has the ampli-torque on it. Can the ampli-torque be broken and the tractor still operate OK? Or would it have to be fixed?

The ampli-torque is used to reduce the speed of the tractor and thus increase the pulling power when moved to low (rear position). High operates through a set of clutches between the engine clutch shaft and the front transmission shaft. Low operates from the clutch shaft through a gear set and a one-way clutch to the transmission shaft. The one way clutches were rollers on the older tractors and sprags on the later ones. Basically it is a two speed that you can shift on the go without using the clutch. It holds back in High but free wheels in low. An advantage/disadvantage of it is that it prevents the tractor from rolling backward when in a forward gear & forward when in reverse but also binds the gears & makes it more dificult to shift gears when in high range.

The most common problem for an Ampli-Torc is for the low range to fail. If this happens you can still use the tractor in high range. It is difficult to shift gears with Torc in high range. It is unusual for the hiogh range to fail but if it does and the low range is out your are dead in the water. If high is out and low is good you can still use tractor but you lose all the higher speeds in each gear.
