In restoring my Z, I wanted to convert over to a 12 volt Delco altnator from a 6 volt generator. Because of mounting restrictions due to the air cleaner, I had to abandon this idea. I then called a gentleman who has worked on generators for many years. He said if I had a healthy 6 volt generator to mount a 12 volt regulator on it & go.He said if I put a heavy load on it that it might heat up some, but on a tractor it should keep the battery up. Has any one else done this? Is there an altnator that will mount under the air cleaner?

You can put an altinator on the Z's it is a little work but it can be done. It's been 6 or 7 years scence I did this so hopefully I'll remember everything. I had to make a different bracket for the Air cleaner to move it up just a little (so I could get the bottom off it) I didn't have to modify the hood. I used the pulley off the orignal generator on the altinator and made a new bracket to hold the alt. The side curtin dosen't come completly closed now but it use to if I had a shorter belt it would again. It is a tight fit and took a little work to get the alt set right so I had some ajustment for the belt and so I could get the bottom off the aircleaner. I also had to turn the rear housing of the alt to give it enough clearance. It had an indent in the back that gave enough clearance for the block. I can probably get you some pictures if you would like.

I have three tractors that I have just changed the regulator and battery (no lites that work on these tractors) and they charge fine. I also put a 12 volt battery in my 1946 Cletrac AG6 and it went right to charging without changing the regulator. Also know a fellow that put a 12 volt battery in his Farmall M and it has charged for years. I would try it if the generator works now on 6 volt.

I have a 40 RTU that started with no wiring at all except for the kill. (mag) It still has the mag but I added a starter lights and a small GM altrtnator. I usad the Moline pulley and it all fits under the hood.
