Having not understood the kind of weather Portland, IN had received over the last week, I got up this morning and got on the road at 5 am for my 4 hour drive to the swap meet. As I was coming into town, I knew something was wrong; I was meeting a steady line of vendors pulling out. It wasn"t until I got to the show grounds did I understand why. The place was a mud hole. I overheard one gentleman say it started raining on Sunday evening and rained everyday and quit Friday night.

While I was at the show today (Sat), I estimated about 40-50% of the vendors understandably were either already gone or in the process of packing up. I must admit I was really surprised when I only saw 3 Moline tractors and just ZA parts on one gentleman"s trailer.

I had never been to this swap meet before so I honestly can"t say I knew what to expect. With that being said, I have to admit I was a bit disappointed with the lack of tractors there, as it seemed to me to be more of a gas engine and lawn and garden swap meet. Please do not think I am docking it, because I am not; but it just wasn"t my flavor. I always enjoyed going to Waukee when I went, although haven"t been since 2000 nor have I ever been to LeSeur. I have been told I need to go north out of IL and get into Minnesota if I want to see a real swap meet, but of course that is one person"s opinion.

My question is this: Where is all the prairie gold at/going? Are we as collectors losing the battle to keep Moline alive? I don"t know the answer as I am just posing the question, so please forgive me and thank you for not condemning me. I realize I am only 30 yrs old, but I have noticed I see less and less of it at shows. Thank you all for your time and consideration and feel free to holler back at me.

I went Wed, and vendors were pulling out and in both that day. Not too bad till supper time, when we were going home. My buddy went back Friday too. It's always cold and wet at this early meet. Lots of Garden tractor stuff, yet not much Power King, which is what I was looking at. Never too much MM there, cept one guy from Mn, who wasn't there this year. I find MM not too heavy anywhere, not even at fall show in Portland. I think Winnamac and Southern IN shows have more MM's. They never were as popular new as the Red and Green brands, but everyone has one of those! The supply of parts and rebuilds has to keep getting smaller as years go by and they get bought and built. Seems a few MM collectors are "Hogging" all of them too. But seems they are dieing off and having big auctions now days, to spread the brand around some.

Aaron, your comment about a fading name rings true with a lot of things. You have to rememeber that White let MM stand like they wanted in the buyout in 1964. MM ran up about 15,000,000 dollars of debt. When White decided to merge everything, MM took them to court and lost in a identity battle at that point. Most people remember the ill fated paint MMs green to sell as Olivers. Vice versa too. People wanted their brands not hybreds. One artilce I read a while stated the last few years MM built their tractor only a few hunderd were sold. Some people blame the paint color change. Some the ever changing face of farming. I hope that you find MM haven you are looking for. I lived in western WI. There are good cross section of what it was really like 40 to 50 years ago for farming. Good looking and good luck. Carlton

Aaron,
We went for the first time this year too. We went Thursday. Had to eat lunch in the truck during one really bad storm - lightning, sleet, small hale, etc. I was told the swap started as a lawnmower only swap meet several years ago and has grown into a tractor swap too. There was quite an exodus of vendors Thursday afternoon once the rain quit. What was muddy before the storm was now standing water and I think that pushed many to call it quits. I was hoping to see more tractor parts especially Moline. There's usually more tractor stuff at the August show/swap at Portland. I've been going to that for several years. I've been going to LeSeuer for several years now and found this year's pickings to be quite slim for Moline parts. Maybe its just I'm getting pickier on what I'm looking for but overall I thought the selection this year was down. I usually find enough to fill the truck when I'm there but this year I had a trailer with me and didn't find anything to load and bring back other than a couple seats and a hood. It rained the whole time at this year's LeSeuer meet too. Made it difficult looking around with your face half covered from the blowing rain. I imagine some vendors stayed away given the weather forecast.

hey, I did not make it to Portland because of the weather. I have not found the excitement in MM clubs and meets that I do in other brands. I keep hoping to find it. I love them Minnies, have a bunch and want to restore more but it is harder than other makes. I think the lack of respect and excitement over the brand is one reason they are not here today. It is as hard to find stuff as it was when I was a kid and we made our living with them
