Has anyone else experienced any cooling system problems unique to the M5 Diesel. I've had trouble and the temporary solution, offerred by two different sources is drilling a small hole in the thermostat to provide bypass. This type of "fix" seems strange to me. Also, why would the diesel have a bypass circuit and the gassers not?

I'm guessing that the M5 thermostat is not located directly in the engine block, same as is on older engines i/e U's, Z's. What happens is that with the thermostat either in the top hose or in the top radiator tank, if a tiny amount of the water can't circulate through it, thus carrying a small amount of hot water from the block, it will get boiling hot in the block before the thermostat ever gets warm enough to open. Then, in my case at least, you have water blowing out the overflow not long after startup.

So, you drill a little hole in the thermostat to let a small amount of water circulate past the thermostat at all times.
