The gear thats on the bottom of the distributor , that mounts in the housing, behind the water pump....how is this area lubricated? When I opened this up it seemed like its lacking in some kind of lubriaction. Thanks again for all your help. P.S. I am trying to get my own repair manual.

For some reason, on the older big MM engines, there seems to be no oil lubrication in this area. There is an oil line that goes to the waterpump shaft, but it seems like it lubricates the front bushing in the oil pump, and the splash lubricates the timing gears. Apparrently, a lot of those tractors ran a good long while with only a little oil vapor lubricating back there. I put some wheel bearing grease on mine.

I just went through replacing a distributor on my 52 UTS. Another important point of lubrication is the shaft. I had the hood off mine for a couple of months while painting and I guess some water got down the distributor shaft and seized it, then when I tried to crank, it sheared the gear off the end of the shaft. There is a plug on the shaft, make it a point to lube it regularly. The book calls for 30wt oil. I put an alemite on mine and shoot it once in a while with econolith (light runny) gun grease. When I was putting the new shaft in, I gobbed heavy bearing grease on it and the worm gear on the water pump shaft. Good luck.

I think that is oiled by crankcase oil isn't there a line that fastens on in this area. It's an 1/8 copper line.
