I just bought a M602 diesel and the pto shaft turns continuously. Is there a way to stop it? I tried the lever under the seat and it doesn't stop it.

Can you stop it with your hand (be careful trying this) or does it turn with equipment hooked to it? My freind has a 602 LP that the clutches are worn on, it turns all the time but you can stop it with your hands if it is not engaged, of course when engaged it works as it should. He just lets it spin and has no plan on fixing it. But that is the kind of person he is, lets things go till he HAS to fix it. It has lasted for several years this way and he uses it daily for ranch/loader work, baling, cutting etc etc.

Dennis,
Forgot to mention that the PTO lever is the 3/4" one to the left of the seat toward the fender. Forward is engaged.

Dennis,
The PTO on the 335, 445, BigMo400, BigMo500, BigMo600, BigMo400M, JetStar, JetStar2, early JetStar3, 5Star, M5, M602 & early M670 have no PTO brake to stop them from turning. Check to see if you can turn the PTO shaft by hand with the tractor engine not running (it will turn fairly hard). If you can, there is probably nothing wrong with the clutch. They will usually turn any piece of equipment that turns very easy when they are cold but usually not when they get warm. Make sure that the PTO handle snaps over solidly and requires some effort to snap it over. The most common cause of failure of the PTO clutch is allowing it to run with too little pressure on the clutch pack (too loose) when engage thus allowing it to slip and warp the clutches. When this happens, The PTO will not disengage even when warm. On the above mentioned tractors, it is sort of a pain to adjust the PTO clutch since doing so requires the removal of the hydraulic reservoir on tractors equiped with 3 point hitch or type E hydraulics, so they are sometimes neglected.
Hope this helps
John
