I am restoring a 1958 GBD and have found that the main bearings (Rod to crank) are worn to the point of the copper underneath the metal finish is just showing through, with some minor scoring. The crank races look fine as far as no scoring. As they are extremely expensive through the dealer up here, I was wondering if I could get much life out of them still, or if I should replace them? What do you guys think? Any idea where I could get new ones? Any advice would be appreciated.

A.G.H.,
It's been my experience that if the copper layer is showing its definitely time to replace them. I've bought a few tractors where the previous owner/farmer let them go only to end up spinning a rod bearing or even a main bearing for that matter destroying the block and crank. You could try Welter's in Missouri (417-498-6496). I've found their prices to be fair (very few Moline parts are "inexpensive" anymore). It's my opinion that if you've got it tore down that far it won't pay in the long run to put the old worn out bearings back in. I'd take off the main caps while you're at it and check them too. If it were my tractor it would be my luck it would spin a bearing just as soon as I got it back together. Just remember if you spin a rod bearing you'll be tearing it all down to replace that rod at the least and probably end up having to have the crank ground.
