I have a 1947 RTU that runs ok at idle but underload it doesn't have power like it use to. I have tried to rebuild the carb. with a NAPA kit but I cannot remove the main jet. There must be rust or crud under it. To make matters worse the main jet screwdriver slot is stripped. And I think that has something to do with its ablity to be adjusted. The only answer is to drill it out. Does anybody sell replacement jets for a tsx-36 or a replacement carb. Or will my ventri fit another carb. that is avalible since it is removable. Right now it runs but not correctly. Any help will be appreciated, thank you.

This triggers a memory. Last winter my Jetstar started doing about the same thing-idle fine, but miss, no power under load. I could even get a fair trickle of fuel through the carb drain. I finally traced the problem to the screen in the filter bowl. It had skimmed over with varnish. I could see light through it, but it wouldn't flow enough fuel. Swapping venturi's didn't work on my '40R. I tried that in a Ford Carb. Apparrently the idle circuit has enough differences that it would sputter when the throttle opened.

Thanks Kelvin for tip on the venturi swap. I will forget about trying to find a different carb model and swap them. I wondered if there was some kind of internal differances inside them to stop them from working together. As far as the screen, mine is clean. When this problem started I figured rotten gas from sitting to long was it. So I drained the tank and the fuel shot out of the fuel line pretty fast. The tank was half full. Then I removed the sediment bowl and cleaned it and the screens with choke cleaner and put it back on. Thank you for your tip J. Jones

J. Jones,

I think you need to resort to the old standby - HEAT - to get that jet out. A few seconds with a lit No. 2 oxy-acetylene tip around the outside of the carb in the area of the jet will work wonders; provided you've got a little of that screwdriver slot left. I couldn't begin to tell you the things that would have been impossible to take apart without heat. Even without getting the jet out you should be able to get anything out from under it with the use of carb cleaner, solvents, etc. and compressed air. A couple other things to look at are to see if you have a good flow of gas thru the carb. Take the drain plug out and see that you get a nice stream for 15-30 seconds. And, I'm getting pretty basic here, you did try adjusting the load needle didn't you?

To Unimog: Thanks for the tip on place to get carb parts, I'll have to try getting a couple nozzles for these carbs from them, that's where I end up having my problems with them.

Jim

Jim I do have a good flow of gas at the line. I have rebuilt the carb myself cleaning it with carb cleaner and choke cleaner then with compressed air. Thank you for making me think basic to try and figure out my problem. And I think I have. It has to be that jet because I remember adjusting it at full throttle and nothing happened, no rpm change at all. I know it should be under some kind of load to do this adjustment properly, but it should effect the rpm in some way shouldn't it. It does on my harley. Again thank you for making me think. Thanks for the tip on the heat I will try it soon as it gets warm. And Unimog thanks for the address I hope they can help me with a jet or at worse a new carburator. J. Jones

Thanks for the address and phone number I hope they can help me with a jet or a new carburator. I would prefer the jet, it would probably be cheaper. Thanks J. Jones
