Can anyone tell me the history of the Big Mo 400 tractors. We bought a 63 model(serial# 16700310) new in late 65 from our local Moline dealer and have used it continuously on our farm ever since.
I remember the dealer saying somthing about most of them going to or being built for the navy but never thought much about it and never saw another like it in the area. I see from the serial# list on this site that not many of these tractors were made. (as many as 357 to as low as 3 for a given Year . I would like to hear any history or stories about these tractors. TIA.

Sorry, I am not set up with one of those photo posting sites, unless there is some other way to do it.
my Big Mo 400 has spent many winters as a chore tractor in a dairy barn full of cattle so the paint is very bad from the wet and ammonia fumes. Might another owner post a picture of a clean or restored Big Mo 400?

We have started a new business on our farm that requires a forklift, so we mounted a Tow Motor fork lift mast on the Big Mo which makes a good little off road forklift.

Jon,
The ones that start with serial numbers that start with '167' are different than the ones that the serial number start with '170'. The ones that start with '170' were built to fit requirements of the Government and use different size engine bearings, crank journals, round gas tank, hood designed for the round tank, no PS, no hydraulics, fixed front axle & heavy industrial rear wheel centers. I believe that ones with serail numbers beginning with '167' used normal JetStar components many with the options excluded above on them. There may be some other differences but these are the ones I can think of right now.

Thanks JK, I did not realize that the Military versions of the big mo 400 were much different than the standard model. Ours has an adjustable front axle. The only options on our tractor are a live pto shaft and a rear mounted live hyd pump. Because the tractor had a hyd pump but no other hydraulics plumbing. It had the hyd pump drive coupler in a little tobacco sack in the tool box with a bit of broom handle where the coupler should be to keep the hyd pump driveshaft in place untill the coupler was installed.

I have a Big Mo 400 with the 167 serial number and it has ps,adj wide front, 3pt, and torque. Other than the dash layout, light brackets, and decals it looks just like a jet star 2. What I was always told was the mm400 was sold by industrial dealers or farm dealers with industrial contracts and could be made however the customer ordered. This would be on the 167 serial numbered units.
